Why Evidence Based Physiotherapy ?

Evidence-based physiotherapy is an important mechanism for ensuring quality care and be sure that the best available treatment is given to the individual patient , according to the latest knowledge in the field. Member organizations in the WCPT have agreed to commit to the goal of developing LBP in all countries. A critical issue for achieving this is the concept of lifelong learning implies different ways for therapists to continue to update their professional knowledge throughout their careers.

How to find current best evidence in practice physiotherapy ?

Often there are systematic reviews published on specific topics related to physiotherapy , which shows the current state of evidence for certain treatments and / or recommendations for clinical conditions. These are available in journals or through electronic databases, for example:

Centre for Evidence Based Physiotherapy , The Netherlands
An online center for the search, collection and dissemination of scientific information in physiotherapy physiotherapists , workers in the health sector, patients and funders of healthcare.

Pedro: Physiotherapy Database data
The physiotherapy specific database based in Australia developed to give rapid access to bibliographic details and abstracts of randomized controlled trials , systematic reviews and evidence-based clinical practice guidelines in physiotherapy . Most studies on the database have been evaluated for quality to help you quickly discriminate between trials which are likely to be valid and interpretable and those that are not.

Cochrane
General database for Health

For a more detailed overview , please see website for WCPT databases related to EBP:

Clinical guidelines

Clinical guidelines emerging tools that are necessary for the treatment of specific clinical condition . There is no single database for clinical guidelines but WCPT has collected some useful international resources on the topic related to physiotherapy.

In the Netherlands, a special emphasis has been given to the development of clinical guidelines is also available in English

Clinical measurement instruments

Today there are many standard clinical measurements and tools to quantify status and the ability of a patient and often depending on their structure and function , activity and participation, according to the proposed model of WHO: International Classification of Operation

Some members of organizations ER-WCPT present databases or directories of clinical operations , such as Sweden and the UK Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Result Measures Database

Database of international projects EBP physiotherapy led by member organizations of ER-WCPT

This issue will be further developed in cooperation with its member organizations .

EBP in relation to education and lifelong learning

It was agreed at the General Assembly of the ER-WCPT Sibenik in Croatia 2006 that Evidence Based Physiotherapy is an important concept for the MO to encourage them to learn and apply to all levels of education in physiotherapy across Europe . Is further discussed , and promoted as necessary documents such as the European Patent Reference physiotherapy and in "The diagram competence of the European Network of Physiotherapy in Higher Education "
