2014 is the year of the new gTLD
Jennifer Wolfe, founder and president of Wolfe Domain, a gTLD digital brand strategy advisory firm is making big predictions for the new gTLDs next year. Below are some excerpts from her recent article.

The new gTLDs are launching and will start to have an impact in 2014. Unlike the .com boom of the 1990s where .com was the only game in town (and no one really knew how to use a domain, nor the potential of the internet), the new gTLDs are launching during a data boom with new sophisticated technologies changing the way marketers think about their strategies as they respond to accelerating consumer adoption in a rapidly changing global marketplace.

The sheer scale and number of new top level domains entering the internet, coupled with Google's search for good content, will mean that authentic domains in new TLDs related to their content and business category will likely rank higher in organic search.

.com will have no real meaning in terms of content in a world of thousands of top level domains. If you are a tennis or golf related business, for example, and you provide dynamic, good, authentic content, then having a domain name in the .tennis or .golf extension may provide additional support and weight to what you are about and for what Google is searching. Likewise, it may be easier for consumers to remember short memorable catchy slogans and campaigns that brands may use in the new TLD space. Consider for a moment social.network, Pandora.channel, play.tennis, ride.horses, opentable.reviews or ebay.auction, jcrew.wedding, and burberry.channel.

5,000 domain names requested alreayd
Interest in .physio has been very strong from all around the world. This month we reached 5,000 .physio domain names being requested. These people will be first to be advised of when the domains will become available.

Our goal is 10,000 requests before we launch in the first half of 2014. Just imagine the promotional leverage for the profession of having 10,000 websites that clearly identify their website as belonging to the physio/physical therapy community.

Please tell your colleagues of this great initiative as the greater the number of websites the greater the benefit for everyone.

.physio membership program
Registrants of .physio domain names will be eligible to get exclusive access to a free membership program designed to support their experience on-line in every way.

Registrants will get help in being found and connected with potential clients, potential employers and potential collaborators. They'll get access to great online resources and information on how to get the best from the digital world. They'll receive great deals and offers relating to all things physio/physical therapy. And they'll have their .physio website promoted to the wider world and be eligible for awards and prizes for the best .physio website.

We are currently working on the program so it is ready to go when registration commences. The future is exciting for .physio domain name registrants and we are going to do our best to make life more rewarding.

When will .physio be available?
At this stage we are hoping to be available to the physio/physical therapy community in mid 2014. The reason for our uncertainty is the moving feast of the ICANN administrative processes.

The first Top Level Domains (TLDs) were launched in October 2013 and from that point only a maximum of twenty TLDs can be released per week. We know that we are number 929 in the priority list order, however there are not necessarily 928 ahead of us. Some TLDs are in contention (more than one applicant), some have objections against them (that need to be sorted out), some have root conflict (technical jargon for potential finding issues) and some have not passed initial examination. So that moves us up the list to approximately number 460. Furthermore not every TLD will be ready or willing to go live when their turn comes. None of these provisions apply to .physio so we could be as high as number 400, which would mean a launch date of about March 2014.

Unfortunately .physio is in a select group of about 180 TLDs that were identified as a regulated industry by ICANN's Government Advisory Committee (GAC). The GAC believe that for public safety extra safeguards are required for TLDs of regulated industries. Therefore we have been temporarily quarrantined whilst the precise details of those safeguards are being determined. The safeguards are not likely to significantly impact on our plans as we concur with the GAC that registration of a .physio domain name should be restricted to members of the physio/physical therapy community.

Our current prediction is a launch date in mid-2014, but we will keep you posted.
